Square Dance News:

February 18th, 2012

I’m sad to report that Lee Schmidt, “The Crawdad Man” one of Square Dancing’s most beloved and popular entertainers has been diagnosed with cancer. Since Lee retired over a year ago, he has also been receiving Dialysis treatments three times a week. Gloria has been taking real good care of him, but you know its been hard on both of them.

He has been calling for over 40 years not only in the United States, but all over the world. Lee loved by Square Dancers around the world, has taught over 20,000 people to Square Dance and over 144 Callers to learn how to call.

I know Lee and Gloria would welcome all your prayers and if you would like to leave a message of encouragement, use the comment section below. (address comments To Lee:)

Also, if you are one of the people who have been to one of his dances or one of the people who learned Square Dancing from him or one of the 144 callers he taught to call or just a friend and you have a interesting story that you would like to share with us, type it into the comment section below.(address comments To Lee:)

We plan to take these stories and put them into a booklet latter on.

Most people have seen some form of square dancing and found it interesting to watch, but how many of you have actually tried it. It can be a lot of fun.

In square dancing, one of the most enjoyable aspects is that you don’t have to decide what step to do next. This is because the dance movements are called out clearly for everyone to hear. You have to listen carefully because you never really know what to expect. This keeps the dancing exciting and a lot of fun. Try it a few times and you’re setting yourself up to fall in love with square dancing.

The rhythm of many different types of music that is played for square dancing is what gets many people excited. Western music, Country music and Irish music are played regularly for square dancing around the world. Some might call this type of music old time music, but it combines delightful sounds of music from long ago into beats you can square dance to.

No special skills are needed for square dancing. You owe it to yourself to give it a try.

In other parts of the world Square Dancing is going strong.  There are active Square Dance Clubs all over the world.  You can get on the internet and find clubs in Australia, New Zeeland, Japan and all over Europe.  If you have any interesting stories or suggestions, leave us a message in the Comment Area.
